Description: A sub shrub that becomes woody as it matures. Small, dark, oval leaves with a purple underside. Dislikes wet conditions.
Origin: Found in Eurasia, typically on dry grassland and calcareous soils.
Thymus is the original Greek name given by Theophrastus.
Rich in many different volatile oils. Characteristic aroma and taste from Thymol.
Culinary Uses: To flavour soups, fish, meat, sausages, marinades and stuffing.
Will retain its flavour in slowly cooked dishes.
Main ingredient of bouquet garni and herbes de provence.
Other: Symbolises death in folklore. The souls of the dead were thought to rest on the flowers and the smell of thyme is associated with haunted sites.
Used by young women to reveal their true love.
A main component of moth repellent balls.
Thymol is an ingredient in toothpaste and mouthwashes.
