Humber VHB Head Office

Welton

  • Welton is the company’s main packing facility.

  • It has the capacity to pack over 7million cases of product.

  • The site is registered with the soil association to pack organic foods.

Combined Heat and Power

  • HumberVHB operates 3 Combined Heat and Power (CHP) installations

  • In total these generate more than 12MW of electricity, enough to supply all the houses in a small town.

  • CHPs when used like this are twice as efficient as normal power stations

  • The gas burned in the CHP units generates tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (CO2).

  • CO2 is necessary for plants to photosynthesise and to grow. When plants photosynthesise, they release Oxygen into the atmosphere. Therefore when linked to a glasshouse, a CHP has no waste emissions and helps plants to generate oxygen.

Poolbank

  • Oldest nursery in the group

  • 13.6 acres of glass yielding more than 7.5 million cucumbers per annum

  • 4 MW CHP provides all the heat, electricity and CO2 necessary for the site

The Environment

  • Most of our nurseries have the capacity to recycle water around the facility thereby reducing the risk of nutrients getting into local aquifors.

  • We find that nature usually has the answer to our problems, so when faced with pests such as aphids and whitefly, we employ natural predators to keep them under control.

  • All of our nurseries use bumble bees to pollenate the plants. We use bumble bees because they are the least aggressive of the various species and therefore reduce the risk of the staff being stung!
